The Casselman Community
Horticulture Club

Planting Seeds for a
Stronger Community

The horticulture club began when another member of the community brought forward an idea focused on environmental stewardship, food security, and shared responsibility for public space. Through the Community Engagement Committee, the idea had a clear place to be explored and supported, allowing it to move from discussion into action. Support was provided to help the initiative get started, including advocacy through council to enable community-led environmental projects. From there, the group organized itself and began taking on tangible projects that benefited the broader community. What followed was a resident-led effort grounded in practicality and collaboration, turning interest in gardening and sustainability into visible, lasting contributions across Casselman.

What This Looked Like in Practice

The horticulture club focused on practical, hands-on initiatives that encouraged participation and learning. Members organized a rain barrel fundraiser to promote water conservation, assisted with the distribution of free trees through South Nation Conservation, and supported residents in making environmentally responsible choices at home. The group also began working in partnership with the municipality and the local public school to develop and maintain Casselman’s first community garden, creating a shared space for education, collaboration, and community pride.

How This Informed My Work

This initiative reinforced the value of supporting community-driven environmental action through clear pathways and partnerships. It highlighted the importance of aligning municipal goals with resident-led initiatives and demonstrated how advocacy through council, combined with strong community leadership, can support sustainability, education, and long-term stewardship. The work of the horticulture club continues to inform how environmental initiatives are approached, emphasizing collaboration, accessibility, and community ownership.

A Concrete Outcome

The horticulture club has delivered tangible and lasting benefits for the community. Residents gained access to rain barrels and free trees, supporting conservation efforts at the household level. Partnerships with South Nation Conservation and the local school strengthened environmental education and youth engagement. Most notably, the groundwork was laid for Casselman’s first community garden, creating a shared space that will continue to support learning, food security, and community connection for years to come. What began as a single resident-led idea has grown into an initiative with measurable environmental and social impact.

These initiatives reflect a commitment to community-led action, supported through inclusive structures and democratic participation.
